the comfort of the north lawn reporting on the pentagon and the white house and the troops upsurge numbers and how this became a project that's really became attached to. lou: you focus on this particular battle, you talk with nearly 225 individuals. how long did that take? >> they range from generals, private, widows, couple insurgents, one of whom i interviewed by skype. it was a big project that every time i thought i wasev done, tak to smitty, i mean ultimately i just had to stop because there was never going to be a time where i had talked to everybody. lou: you are pursuing one of the toughest explanations, that is how those men can be caught ate that outpost and be the target to be outnumbered so outrageously and incapable of being protected. this is how it started. how is in hospi in the hospitaly newborn son, jack. he was a day-old, out of the corner of my eye i saw the story about the outpost and never heard of combat outpost. coverage along the lines of what would anybody put outpost there? it became a mystery that i needed to solve. why woultd we put our troops in such a vulner

exhibits a skepticism, who would be at the helm of the pentagon. >> but at this point obama is going to look really weak if he doesn't own hagel. and he's been so silent. i really just don't understand why because he has political capital right now, he should use it, but he's not coming out to defend these candidates who are putting themselves on the line for him. >> he came out to defend susan rice strongly but that didn't necessarily turn the tide. aaron, i'm curious if you think this ends up being a test case for how, for where we draw the boundaries of what is acceptable or unacceptable outside the sort of boundaries of what we will allow if hagel's nomination is sunk or are the stakes not that high? >> well, i think they are high for the administration because i worked for half a dozen secretaries of state. what i've seen over the last three weeks in washington is virtually unprecedented. this is the second punitive nominee, i mean, there hasn't even been a formal announcement of a nomination. the first was susan rice. and now she was preemptively basically forced to withdraw. a
their budgets cut, depending whether it the pentagon or other agencies. the agencies can try to shield some programs for others. social security benefits are not going to be cut. the pay for pentagon officials is not going to be cut. if this drags on into march or april, they will have to do furloughs, is essentially giving people vacations. host: the headline from "the wall street journal." is that one way to do that? guest: that is a painful way to do that. when people do not have money to spend, the economy is not going to grow. if this goes on for a couple of days and the stock market falls dramatically, congress and the white house may be able to avoid some of the long-term consequences. if everybody digs end, more disasters things could take hold. host: the president, vice president, speaker of the house, democratic leader of the house, will be meeting today. from the reporting you have done, what will be happening? guest: they could sit down and cut a deal in five minutes. they know all the issues. they know where their parties are. they could sit down in five minutes, shaking hands,
cooperation of kathryn bigelow and other administration, received from the white house and the pentagon, documented in the e-mails that have come out, do you think that maybe unmaliced the film a little bit or compromised the independence. >> the obama administration comes off, if anything, poorly with this. the one scene with the president his view on torture comes off prissy and only appears in the cameo in the background in a "60 minutes" interview. >> you have written there's a theory that screen writer fell in love with his cia sources and embraced their perspective wholeheartedly. explain. >> well, i mean from what i gather, i think that's true. and in a peculiar way, this is sort of a feminist movie in that he put a lot of their feelings into the character of this woman who actually, whose role in the story is to drive the men to be more decisive, to be, if you will, more macho, take a chance, take risks, take this sfrmg.o.b down and not do this probability stuff. >> i'm going to make a prediction, this film is going to do very well given the avalanche of publicity even before it
that we'll have quadrennial review, a 4-year plan just like the pentagon. i don't know that is the best model to work on. gerri: i have to ask you about bp today. >> sure. gerri: because there's big news coming from bp. the federal government says you're disqualified from winning new contracts. here's bp statement. suspension that is due to bp's lack of business integrity as dep straighted by the company's conduct with regard to the deepwater horizon blowout explosion, oil spill and response. now the stock did not really get hit today. what is your estimate what this means? >> i think it will be a temporary move. i think the obama administration again is wanting to show, hold up bp, that we're punishing them. this is enormous company. it is one of the biggest oil and gas producers in the u.s.. gerri: doesn't it matter if it loses contracts from the u.s.? >> they have a lot of contracts already. so those contracts don't go away. there is enonly on new contracts. it is important but i think it is a temporary deal. gerri: robert, you must come back and sit on the set again. always a pleasu
who are very upset with the cuts that would hit the pentagon. it may be difficult to rally republican votes of the cannot turn off the sequester. on the democratic side, the estate tax could be a problem. the republicans are insistent that the estate tax stay at current levels, which is exempting the state of $55 million at a relatively late 35% above that level. many democrats would like to see -- in january it is expected to come -- taxes are expected to go up dramatically. as small as $1 million would be taxed. most democrats want to see something in the metal. they are adamant that we cannot exempt states as large as $5 million. that could be another sticking point. >> do we expect anything going on today? if not, what is the earliest of the senators will come back in for session tomorrow? caller: i think the senate is due back in at 1:00. the house is due at 6:30. the house is the big question mark here. it is very difficult to imagine what could pass the house. as for today, that is an excellent question. the senate is not in here the house is not an. my understanding as we are
, pentagon, watergate, iran-contra. >> clayton: i've had the pleasure of meeting him over the years and usually a fair-minded person so for him to come out and say this in person, he may have some evidence to show it's credible and may keep pushing forward. a lot of people are not happy the way that benghazi unto folded, that we were caught flat-footed and even though there were military members. >> and specifically what he's referring to, having read the transcript, on thursday there was a senate foreign relations committee asking exactly the same questions they asked on the first day of the benghazi tragedy and that is the cia memo left the cia with the specific references to al-qaeda in it. by the time the memo was presented to susan rice and came out of her mouth on the sunday morning talk shows, those records as to al-qaeda had been spiked, who did that? even after the report, they don't know who sponged those references. once again on thursday, he says, come on, this is the question. >> and four individuals lost their jobs at the state department as a result of the report that
, so do have the debt ceiling fight coming up. when you say that it faces and, you expect the pentagon to say we would just hold everything? certainly years, serving months ahead of time. they have to plan on how many people to have in their workforce -- in the force, recruiting. you cannot turn on a dime, like a huge oil tanker. >> john, we will focus on folks that we did not know who are here. we will come right back. don't go away. take five minutes. >> this is just -- >> we saw senators mccain and 11 decide they will come back in a couple of minutes. as we wait, back to something that took place earlier this morning outside the capital. -- the capitol. >> i want to thank you for being here to call on house republicans not to drop the ball on the middle-class. also for the house to show up for work, right? the president is down at the white house, senator harkin and his colleagues are here. they are out on a paid vacation right now. boehner walked out of the allegations with the present and then he walked out of the house and tell all members to go home while we are four days away f
partnering with the pentagon to send 35 additional detachments of the marine security guards that's about 235 marines to the medium and high for outposts where they will serve as a visible deterrent to a hostile act. that is on top of the 150 detachments we already deployed. we are aligning resources in the 2013 budget request to address the physical form a devotees and reinforce the structures wherever needed to address the risk from fire. let me add we may need your help to ensure that we have the authority to streamline the usual process that produced faster results. we are seeking to hire more than 150 diplomatic security personnel and increased 5% to provide them with the equipment and training that they need. there is the arb recommended we will target them squarely at securing our - outposts. i want to second the praise for the professionals. i served in this department for only two years having come from the private sector. however, as i travel to places like iraq, afghanistan and pakistan i have seen firsthand how the dedicated men and women risk their lives. we all hold them with a
